Chemotherapy Unit

Chemotherapy Unit

The Chemotherapy Unit, within the Department of Medical Oncology, is responsible for the outpatient treatment. Chemotherapy is administered to the patients in treatment chairs in the unit. The patients are instructed, and examined for side effects prior to chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is the treatment of a tumor with drugs. It is used in combination with surgery and radiation therapy to treat tumors. Chemotherapy aims to kill tumor cells or stop tumor growth. Sometimes one or more drugs are given by different routes of administration.

What is the purpose of chemotherapy?

Depending on the type and stage of the cancer, chemotherapy may be used to:

  • Treat the disease
  • Prevent the spread of the disease
  • Slow down the growth of the disease
  • Destroy cancer cells that may have spread elsewhere
  • Reduce the inconvenience/complaints associated with the disease

Scalp Cooling System

Although hair loss is the most common side effect of chemotherapy, there is less emphasis and concern about preventing or managing this side effect compared to other side effects. There have been various scientific studies on this topic around the world, but the Scalp Cooling System is the most effective and scientifically proven method when compared to other methods.

Medical Oncology

The field of science that deals with chemotherapy is called "medical oncology", and the specialist that works in this field is called a "medical oncologist". Medical Oncology is a unique specialty. A medical oncologist is an internal medicine specialist who specializes in the treatment of tumors. Treating tumors requires teamwork and must be done in centers where all members of the team are present. The team must include a surgeon specialized in tumor surgery, a radiation oncologist for radiation therapy, and a medical oncologist for chemotherapy and patient care (supportive care).

The medical oncology department of this hospital is staffed by medical specialists who are renowned in the province, region and even nationally.
