Influenza, also known as the flu, is defined as a contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses and affects many people every year, especially in the winter. This year, however, there is a marked increase in the number of influenza cases throughout Turkey, and this is expressed as patient density in the emergency departments of health institutions and family health centers.
Sudden temperature changes during the winter months affect the immune system and contribute to an increase in influenza cases. Nowadays, protection against influenza is of vital importance, especially for people in high-risk groups. Med. Dr. Kayhan Uğuz, Specialist in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, Medline Adana Hospital, says that Influenza is a disease that can cause serious health problems, but is largely controllable if precautions are taken.
People in high-risk groups should use caution
Influenza is a respiratory infection characterized by symptoms such as sudden onset of fever, muscle aches, weakness, dry cough, and runny nose caused by influenza A and B viruses. The virus is spread through airborne droplets from sneezes and coughs. Moreover, close contact with a sick person or touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes also increases the likelihood of illness. Children, the elderly, and people with chronic medical conditions are especially at risk for developing a severe flu infection.
Can lead to serious consequences
The healthcare system has also been strained by the recent significant increase in influenza cases. While flu patients usually recover within a week, the disease can sometimes lead to serious consequences such as pneumonia. Especially in individuals with weakened immune systems, the disease may require hospitalization, and may cause serious problems such as respiratory failure. If severe symptoms such as high fever, shortness of breath, or confusion are observed, medical attention should be sought immediately.
Antibiotics won't work
Treatment includes rest, drinking plenty of fluids, starting antiviral treatment if recommended by a physician, and using medications to relieve symptoms. It is important to remember that antibiotics are not effective in treating influenza. This is because influenza is a viral disease, and antibiotics are only effective against bacterial infections. Using medicines without medical advice can lead to the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Precautions should not be waived
One of the most effective things you can do to protect yourself from the flu is to practice good hygiene. It is crucial to wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water, use masks in crowded environments, avoid contact with sick people, eat foods that strengthen the immune system, and maintain sleep patterns. Seasonal influenza vaccines are known to be an effective method of prevention, especially for individuals in high-risk groups.
Flu widespread after the pandemic
Recently, there has been a change in the course of influenza cases due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although there had been a significant reduction in flu cases due to the long-term use of masks and the implementation of social distancing, the flu has become widespread again after the measures were lifted. Weakened immunity, particularly to respiratory infections, has recently led to a rapid increase in influenza-related illnesses. Therefore, it should be kept in mind that the flu and COVID-19 may present with similar symptoms, and appropriate tests should be performed as needed.
