Overcome Spring Fatigue In 5 Steps

Although the warming of the weather, the revival of nature and the lengthening of the days are a source of energy and excitement for many people, this period means fatigue, weakness and reluctance for some. This condition is called ‘spring fatigue’ and although it is usually not long-term, it can negatively affect daily life.

Saying "Spring fatigue is a physiological and psychological condition that the body experiences while trying to adapt to new weather conditions, temperature increase and changes in the duration of daylight with seasonal changes. It usually starts in the first weeks of spring and can last for several weeks.", Assoc. Prof. Ahmet Aktaş, Internal Medicine Specialist at Meline Adana Hospital explained the causes, symptoms and ways to cope with spring fatigue.

There may be another underlying cause

Many individuals attribute their weakness to ‘spring fatigue’ especially in the spring months. However, the types of fatigue experienced are analysed in three groups as chronic fatigue syndrome, fatigue due to unhappiness and spring fatigue, and it is necessary to distinguish them from other disease symptoms. As sometimes what is thought to be spring fatigue can also be a sign of other underlying diseases.

Beware if symptoms persist for a long time!

Diseases that can be confused with spring fatigue include anaemia, infections, immune system diseases, eating disorders, thyroid diseases, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, sleep disorders and depression. Therefore, it is useful to consult a specialist if the symptoms last longer than 2-3 weeks and seriously affect the daily life of the individual.

It affects quality of life

Although spring fatigue is not a disease, it refers to a process that can temporarily reduce the quality of life. During this period, complaints such as fatigue, headache, insomnia, distraction and reluctance are quite common. Especially those who work in desk jobs and stay in closed environments for a long time are more affected by this condition.

Small changes can make all the difference

You can try to overcome this period more easily by making small changes in your daily life. These steps will also help you to go into the coming summer months in a fit state.

  1. Taking a warm shower in the morning helps to start the day more energetic by accelerating blood circulation. Likewise, taking short breaks at work also helps to rest the mind.
  1. Eating a balanced and regular diet, drinking enough water and walking outdoors for at least 30 minutes every day can alleviate symptoms. In addition, a diet based on fruit and vegetables supports the vitamin and mineral balance of the metabolism.
  1. Paying attention to regular sleep patterns also plays an important role in alleviating spring fatigue. Going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, getting quality sleep and avoiding sleep deprivation allows the body to adapt to the seasonal transition more easily. Avoiding unnecessary caffeine and sugar consumption helps to use energy in a more balanced way.
  2. Avoiding stress, being in a positive mood as much as possible will reduce the effects of spring fatigue. Relaxing activities such as yoga, meditation, breathing exercises provide both physical and spiritual relaxation during this period.
  1. If you can, take a holiday for a few days and get out of the city. Changing your environment, even for a short time, will increase your energy and motivate you.
