Sleep Disorders Laboratory is at Your Service

Sleep is a biological process that allows the body to rest and regenerate physically and mentally. Although the daily sleep requirement varies from person to person, 7-9 hours of sleep is sufficient for an adult. A sleep disorder is defined as having trouble sleeping for more than one month. Today, many people suffer from sleep disorders due to various reasons. There are many known types of sleep disorders. The patient who consults the physician with this condition is first investigated for the factors that cause sleep problems.

How are sleep studies performed in our laboratory?

In our sleep disorders centre, our technicians monitor you throughout the night by means of electrodes placed on different parts of your body. During this test, called polysomnographic (PSG) sleep study, your sleep and various body functions during sleep are recorded by the technicians in a comfortable place all night long.

Electroencephalogram (EEG), electrooculogram (EOG), eyeball movements, electromyogram (muscle tension recordings-EMG), as well as breathing air, respiratory movements during sleep, oxygen levels, heart rhythm and lying position are typically recorded to distinguish sleep periods.

Polysomnographic sleep records kept all night are evaluated by the relevant physicians. In addition, the degree of snoring, the duration and frequency of respiratory arrests and the findings that occur during this period are reported and the factors that cause the patient's sleep problem are examined first. After the cause is identified, appropriate treatment is determined and planned according to the result.
