Summer Diarrhoea Alert in Children!

With the arrival of summer, diarrhoea in children emerges as one of the most common health problems. During this period, there has been a significant increase in cases of diarrhoea due to hot weather, insufficient attention to hygiene rules, and the consumption of food and beverages sold in open markets.

Saying that diarrhoea must be monitored very carefully, especially in children under the age of 5, Dr. Özgül Görür, paediatrics specialist at Medline Adana Hospital provided important information with a warning that water and mineral loss in such cases can lead to serious problems in a short period of time.

Caused by bacteria or parasites

Summer diarrhoea is usually caused by viruses, bacteria or parasites. One of the most common causes is rotavirus. In addition, bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli (Escherichia coli) can also cause diarrhoea. These are usually transmitted to humans through contaminated water, unwashed fruits and vegetables, and undercooked foods.

The danger is increasing for young children

Diarrhoea manifests itself as frequent and watery stools accompanied by increased bowel movements. In addition, symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever and fatigue may also be observed. Since children lose fluids more quickly, this situation can lead to a very serious condition. Although summer diarrhoea is usually mild, it should be monitored closely, especially in children under the age of 5. Because water and mineral loss can lead to serious and unwanted problems in a short period of time.

Drink plenty of water and take minerals

The most important step in treating diarrhoea is to quickly restore lost fluids and minerals. Therefore, children should be given plenty of water, oral rehydration solutions containing salt and sugar, or liquids that can be prepared at home, such as buttermilk or rice water.

Diet is becoming increasingly important

Care should also be taken with nutrition during periods of diarrhoea. Light foods that are easy on the stomach, such as yoghurt, rice porridge, bananas and boiled potatoes, should be preferred. Fatty, spicy and sugary foods should be avoided.

Waste no time

Excessive fluid loss (dehydration) is the most dangerous consequence of diarrhoea. If you experience symptoms such as dry lips, decreased tear production, decreased skin elasticity, or inability to urinate, you should seek medical attention immediately. If the child has a high fever, bloody diarrhoea, or diarrhoea that lasts longer than 2-3 days, it is essential to consult a doctor. In this case, antibiotic treatment or more specific interventions may be necessary.

Take note of these precautions to protect yourself

  • Encourage them to wash their hands frequently.
  • Do not drink water from open water sources during the summer months; choose bottled water instead.
  • Wash the vegetables and fruits thoroughly.
  • Obtain food from reliable sources
  • Ensure that foods such as ice cream and fruit juice are stored under conditions suitable for the cold chain.
